14-year-old girl dies after stabbing near Ulm – DW – 05/12/2022

Police in southern Germany have confirmed that a 14-year-old girl was killed and a 13-year-old girl was seriously injured on Monday morning after being attacked in the street on her way to the Illerkirchberg village school.

The two girls were assaulted around 7:30 a.m. local time by a man armed with a knife.

Investigators confirmed that early indications were that they had been stabbed.

“The 14-year-old girl required resuscitation at the scene before she could be taken to hospital, where, despite all efforts to save her life, she died,” police said.

The other girl remains hospitalized with serious but not life-threatening injuries, they added.

Information published on the suspect

Police and prosecutors said late Monday that the prime suspect was a 27-year-old Eritrean asylum seeker.

Authorities said the man, who is currently hospitalized and in custody, fled to a shelter after the attack.

“When police and SWAT teams searched the premises, they encountered three residents, all Eritrean asylum seekers,” authorities said in a statement.

Police said the man was in the house before the attack and had a knife – believed to be the weapon used in the attack – on him when he was arrested.

The other two men from the shelter were taken away for questioning.

Earlier in the day, police told reporters they intended to carry out “a thorough background investigation”. In the evening, a spokesperson said it was “already running at full speed”.

No reason has yet been announced.

The police statement stressed that although such an event could cause fear and emotion, the authorities asked “that no general suspicion be harbored against foreigners, refugees or asylum seekers in general, or that such suspicions are aided or abetted”.

German federal, state and local officials denounce ‘horrible’ incident

Local police say the operation, which was carried out with the help of a SWAT team, is now complete and there is no longer a threat to the public.

Mayor Markus Häussler, who was at the scene of the crime all morning, described the situation as “horrible” during an interview with the Southwest Press newspaper.

Häussler said Illerkirchberg – a picturesque Baroque village of 5,000 people located south of Ulm on the Baden-Württemberg/Bavaria border halfway between Stuttgart and Munich – is “in shock”.

Later that evening, German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) took to Twitter, writing: “I mourn the murdered child and hope with all my heart that the injured girl recovers her health.” . Faeser said his thoughts and prayers are with the families of the two girls.

Baden-Württemberg Interior Minister Thomas Strobl lamented that the 14-year-old was “suddenly torn from life”. Strobl also offered words of support and condolences to the families and friends of the young girls.

After wishing the surviving girl a full recovery, the politician promised to find out exactly what happened and why.
